The title itself, “Laughing with My Mouth Wide Open,” as well as the brightly colored
poster can lead to expectations of chuckles and laughs from this one-woman show
performed and written by Gwendoline Yeo and directed by Mark St. Amant. The
audience did receive comedy, but they also received a glimpse of reality.
Starting off as a young kid in Singapore and ending as a student graduating from college,
Yeo depicted her journey from a kid in Singapore to a college graduate in the United
States of America, as well as the journey of her family members.
The fictional, semi-autographical show poked fun at the customs of herself as and her
family, as they developed mentally after their move the United States of America.
Situations that are not unknown in society were also brought to the surface: physical
abuse within the household, expectations of becoming a doctor, altering one’s behavior
to “fit in”, inappropriate sexual advances in school.
The audience is taken on a journey towards the resolution of these issues and the healing
process involved with a dysfunctional family and the challenges thrown at a person.
Transitioning quickly from role to role, voice to voice, Yeo delivered a stunningly
beautiful performance that garnered a mixture of chuckles and tears. Her performance
merited a standing ovation from the audience.
“Laughing with My Mouth Wide Open” will be performed at El Centro Theatre on
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 7:00 PM from November
