San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim has been refusing to recite the pledge of allegiance since high school.

“I don’t think our flag represents a nation when there’s livery and justice for all,” says Kim. “And I reserve my right to disagree or to even protest when I think our government isn’t representing the best of our ideals or principles.”

Kim is a career civil rights attorney. She was previously the president of the San Francisco Board of Education, Kim was a supporter of immigrant families and was involved in politics attributed to decreases in the expulsion rates at SFUSD.
