Palisades Park, in North Jersey, will display the first U.S. memorial to women forced into slavery by Japanese during WWII on October 23rd, 2010. Hundreds of thousands Asian women, mostly Korean, were forced into sexual slavery by Japanese soldiers before and during WWII. The Japanese military established these brothels and lured and kidnapped women to work in these houses. This memorial, a boulder with a plaque, will be displayed outside the public library, making it the first of its kind in the U.S. The unveiling will feature readings of poems about the comfort women written by local Korean-Americans, as well as a short play about the victims. The Korean American Voters Council, who is responsible for this first memorial, is planning to help set up memorials in other U.S. locations that are home to large Korean-American populations, including New York and California.
