The Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys and the Tonys are a time to celebrate the best and worst theatrical productions, movies and television shows of the year. A nomination has the power to launch careers to new heights, creating and cementing a director’s legacy in Hollywood. Yet, for Asian directors, this is an elusive dream to achieve even in 2025.

The 39th Annual Nikkei Student Union (NSU) Cultural Night took place on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the Royce Hall Auditorium. As the curtain fell and thunderous applause echoed through the hall, one could only marvel at the dedication and professionalism exhibited by the cast and performers, as well as the synergy between this year’s production and its annual theme: 懷古 (Kaiko), or Nostalgia.

Asian American 131B taught by Brian Niiya delves into the incarceration of Japense Americans in WW2. Niiya incorporates guest speakers into the course, as well as hands on experiences at YRL Library. He ensures that each student feels a connection to the content espeically if they have a family member who was apart of the incarceration. Students find the class to be very impactful to themselves, and UCLA as a whole as well.
