As the years progress, the Asian American community establishes more prominence and influence in society, including the music industry. Simply reminiscing over 2009, bands and individual artists established and conducted by Asian Americans have shown up in various musical genres and styles.
These styles vary from hip-hop like Kero One to slow jams by Kawehi. Meg and Dia and Far East Movement (FM) add their own flare and attitude to the mainstream music industry. David Choi has become a well-known acoustic artist not only amongst the Asian American community, but nationally as well. Vudoo Soul, Taiyo Na, Magnetic North, Alfa, G*LEE, Marie Choi, and SiC even remixed a popular song by renowned hip-hop/R&B artist Ne-Yo (“Closer”). Nylon Pink’s performance of Lipstick even adds to the pop genre amongst all the other performers. Indie and underground music also feature Asian American artists.
Through their performances they introduce the world to their past and history, their present position in society, and the model minority and their future promise of establishing a lasting impact in society. Blogger Slant Eye for the Round Guy has compiled a list of fairly popular songs created by Asian American artists. The entire list can be found at this site: The Year in Music Videos By Asian American Artists. By no means is this an exhaustive list of Asian Americans making their stake in society, but there are Asian American performers that have established themselves within their community and have become celebrities amongst their county. Kathy Nguyen and Gabe Bondoc come to mind when mentioning such attributes. A friend of mine Davis Truong has also written songs that have become popular amongst our peers. As time progresses and the world becomes more culturally infused, we should begin to see a greater fan base for Asian American artists and possibly the emergence of many more artists.
