Bullying, a Serious Problem for Asian Americans

By on November 8, 2011 – 12:42 AMNo Comment

Studies show that Asian Americans are the biggest target of bullying in schools. Policymakers have said that Asian Americans are more likely to be victims of bullying because of their accents and other language barriers. Recent data from the US Justice Department and Education Department shows that compared to 31.3% of white teenagers, 38.4% of African American teenagers, and 34.3% of Hispanic teenagers, 54% of Asian American teenagers reported that they were bullied at school.

President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan have stated that the campaign against bullying is a high priority on their agendas. Last March, the president warned in an online anti-bullying conference about the dangers of social media while Secretary Duncan has led efforts to bring awareness about the mental and physical damage caused by bullies.
